Margot Wallström skriver om hur EU, i och med det nya konstitutionsförslaget, går mot ökad federalism, åtminstone i symbolisk mening:
"From a SYMBOLIC point of view it is fundamental – because it describes the values and objectives of the European Union, it strengthens the European citizenship and gives explicit rights to all of us and it even establishes common symbols like a flag and an anthem (which of course complements the national ones)."
Ett av grundproblemen med EU och demokratin är just att det inte finns ett europeiskt folk att grunda demokratibygget på. (Vilket gör att det inte heller finns någon europeisk debatt eller några europeiska medier.) Tror man att man ska kunna lösa upp den knuten med hjälp av formuleringar i konstitutionen, en flagga och en EU-hymn?
